Tucked away in the Monte Cristo Range of Northern Utah is Red Spur Mountain. This range is east of the Bear River Range which is east of the Wasatch Range so there are considerably less visitors here. The highest peak is not the one labeled on maps as Red Spur Mountain. The one labeled on maps has a road to the top and some communication equipment in the area.

Parked on the east ridgeline, hike up through easy forest toward the summit. Just before breaking out of the trees, there might be some brush. The last few feet climb above the trees to a nice open summit with grand views of the rolling mountain topography.
I accessed the peak from Highway 39 east of Huntsville. Near the Monte Cristo Campground, I took Forest Road 059 north for quite some distance until I was at the peak. This is a nice scenic drive but probably not the fastest way to the peak.
A better option might be my return route: Take Hwy 101 the Blacksmith Fork Canyon east out of Hyrum (S. Logan). Follow as it becomes Hardwire Ranch Road. When this road turns north, shortly thereafter should be a road to the right FR 61 I believe. This dirt road is reasonable but takes time as it climbs to the 4 way intersection just north of the peak. At this 4 way on the ridge in the forest, turn right. Park at 8,600 on the east ridge of the peak. There is a nice campsite in timber there.
