Friday Harbor

Every destination has its most popular hikes. For San Juan Island, Young Hill is the most popular summit hike, offering views over Garrison Bay, the narrow straits to Victoria and the Gulf Islands. Young Hill is a good alternative to the island highpoint Mount Dallas which is located on private property. There is even some nice history to learn along the way.

Whale Tours
Probably the most popular tour from the island, there are many outfitters wanting your business to go see some Orcas.
Kayak Tours
The second most popular tour from the island is kayaking tours, especially ones promoting wildlife. Most take off from the west side of the island but they likely shuttle you from Friday Harbor.
The Whale Museum
See life-sized whale models and skeletons, watch wildlife films, read about current scientific research, find whale brains, take a tour, and listen to lectures. The store sells resources for wildlife viewing and other whale trinkets. .
Sailing Tours
Go out for a day or overnight trip on a large sail boat. You will see wildlife and incredible scenery guaranteed.
Shops & Food
Always popular, just walking around poking your head into shops and eating in the various restaurants is fun. There are just a few blocks of tourist shops so this shouldn't take you too long. Many do this activity while their car is parked in line for the return ferry home.
Waterfront
Friday Harbor is lacking in waterfront activities and the public access is rather short. There is a small park that can be enjoyed and a few marina docks that can be walked to look at some of the boats. Luckily, the bay can be viewed well from the ferry boat.
