Cancun Travel
Chichen Itza is the most visited archaeological site in the Yucatan peninsula. The ancient city prospered between 600 and 1250 A.D. It is 2.5 hours drive out of Cancun but with a toll road, the trip is made easy. This place has become a world destination as they have restored more and more over the years. I have seen Chichen Itza pop up on more "top 10 sights in the world you must see" lists over the last few years. The site is large, requires a lot of walking but each area of ruins within the jungle is worth visiting. If you like, english speaking guides will offer their services the second you get out of your car. We took the non-toll road back to Cancun. This was a mistake. Said to be more scenic, it was slow, full of topes in every little town. Valladolid was the only interesting spot on the way back, a town of decent size with an interesting square and church.
