Schynige Platte to Grindelwald

Grindelwald

Schynige Platte

We took train back to Lucerne, then took the train to Interlaken. Went to the youth hostel but it was packed. We walked to a campground instead. Good view of the Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau from camp. Next morning we walked to town and took a short bus to Windel. Took train/cog up to Schynige Platte. This was the start of 6 hour hike to First and Grindelwald. The weather was excellent most of the time. We even climbed one small mountain. In town we grabbed a bite to eat. A big rainstorm came. We bought tickets to go to Kline Scheidegg. We were guessing the weather was going to be good after the shower and we were right.

The Schynige Platte is an area in the Bernese Oberland where the Schynige Platte Railway ends. Schynige Platte is basicly a ridge that divides the large valley of Interlaken and the valleys of Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen. The area offers spectacular views to many surrounding mountains, including Jungfrau, Eiger, Silberhorn, Thunersee and Brienzersee. At the top of the railway station there is a hotel and mountain restaurant. Schynige Platte is a start point for the popular hiking trails to Faulhorn and First, a 9+ mile trek through spectacular alpine country.
Grindelwald is found in a narrow valley high in the Bernese Oberland Swiss Alps. If I were to choose a second life, it would be there. Grindelwald is surrounded by the spectacular mountain trio of the Eiger, Monch & Jungfrau. It is a hikers, climbers and skiers paradise. Kleine Scheidegg can be reached by car so there are more amenities than some smaller yet even more scenic villages in the area. Winter is just as popular in Grindelwald, if not more. They put on all kinds of winter activities.
