Frigid Mountain

Located at the west end of Icicle Ridge, and the south end of the Chiwaukum Range, Frigid Mountain is an unofficial name for a high peak listed as #24 on the Backcourt List. It is climbed most often in spring, by utilizing the Chatter Creek Trail, followed by a long snow-filled chute. If snow conditions are good, much of the route down from the summit to Chatter Creek can be glissaded.

Washington Hikes
Take the Icicle Creek Road out of Leavenworth for around 12 miles to the signed turnoff for the Chatter Creek Trailhead. If you hit the Chatter Creek Campground, you went too far.
Access:
The Chatter Creek Trail goes its first mile at a reasonable gain before going steep and climbing quickly up the mountain side. At 4,600 feet the trail crosses (back) to the east side of Chatter Creek. Shortly after crossing the creek, the trail goes through a grove of vine maple trees. Just past these trees (back into forest) look on the right for the remains of a decomposing log. Here, a climbers path goes steeply up the hill avoiding the vine maple swath visible just outside the forest edge. The climbers trail will end at a boulder field above the vine maple swath back out in the open area. Hopefully the boulder field is snow covered, either way, take it up to a basin at 6,500 feet, then easy terrain to an upper basin at 6,800 feet. Now choose the best option for accessing the summit ridge. This will depend on avalanche conditions and cornice locations. The south summit is listed on maps as higher but most agree the north summit is definitely higher. The terrain all along the summit ridge is easy, just stay back near the shrub trees away from cornices.
