Hill 88 in the Marin Headlands makes an easy get away from San Francisco if you are on vacation. Really, it should be considered a sight to see as there are several attractions in this area of Golden Gate National Recreation Area. This hike is something that will not require more than a few hours and probably gives you the best view of the Headlands.

Route:
From the parking lot by Rodeo Beach, hike the gated paved road going uphill. A short distance up the road, go left at a sign saying Coastal Trail. This shortcut takes in a few views of the sea cliffs before merging back onto the paved road. Soon you will pass Battery Townsley on the left from WWII. Eventually the pavement is washed out by a slide but a hiking trail continues up regaining the pavement higher up. Continue climbing, avoiding a dirt road going to what looks like the higher point. Just before the final push, the gradient levels a bit and you are on Wolf Ridge. Rest and climb the final stretch (paved) to the summit. On top are several old concrete bunkers from a former radar station. The views are in all directions, but the close proximity to the ocean and Marin Headlands makes this a really unique hiking spot.
Access:
Go north on highway 101, take the Alexander Ave. exit (second exit after crossing the bridge), stay to the right on the exit ramp to get onto Alexander Ave. Turn left on Bunker Road. (a brown sign saying Marin Headlands Visitor Center marks the intersection). Go through the one-way tunnel and drive approximately 2.5 miles to the end of the road. At 2 miles you will pass Field Road (access to visitors center), and then pass Rodeo Lagoon on the left just before the parking at the end of the road.
